Waves in Mallorca

Summer disappeared with a bang this year. Mallorca was pounded by rain, wind and waves for weeks – or at least that’s how it felt. One minute we’re paddling in the sea, the next wading through torrents of water gushing down streets.

We’re often thought of as a party island by the lesser informed who have only heard of the antics in Magaluf or watched that high brow programme “Love Island”. For others Mallorca is the perfect place for family holidays with gentle, shallow, sandy bays and azure seas fringed by sweet smelling pine trees. It is also an incredibly popular destination for sailors, walkers and bird watchers.

For all these visitors the sea is an important part of their trip: for swimming in or floating on, cooling off after a tough sunbathing session, a backdrop to trekking routes or for that perfect selfie, a feeding ground for the rare Audouin’s Gull that is found here.

Personally I find myself mesmerised by the simple motion of the waves, be they gently lapping or ferociously smashing up onto Cala San Vicente‘s rocks. The waves in Mallorca fulfil all our needs one way or the other.
